May 20 is the birthday of Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping. In 2014, the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association took the initiative to declare World Bee Day, which was supported by the Government of the Slovenian Republic. In 2017, the United Nations declared May 20 World Bee Day.
