In 2019, the company BIA Separations from Ajdovščina, a city in Slovenia, received a gold award from the Chamber of Commerce of North Primorska for innovation in the development of the purification process of the genetic drug Zolgensma for the treatment of infants with deadly spinal muscular atrophy type 2 (SMA). In 2020, the German company Sartorius bought BIA Separations for as much as 360 million euros, which is the third largest sales value of the Slovenian company.
